The False Gospel of Mormonism

In conversations with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I have encountered arguments that reveal deep misunderstandings and dangerous distortions of biblical truth. Mormonism, far from being aligned with biblical Christianity, is a man-made religion rooted in false prophecy and unbiblical doctrines that threaten the foundation of the gospel.

One commonly stated Mormon teaching is that only “a few” face eternal punishment while most receive some degree of glory, even if imperfectly. This teaching fundamentally misrepresents Scripture. Jesus plainly teaches that “many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14, NLT) and warns, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it” (Matthew 7:13-14). Furthermore, Revelation 20:10 describes the eternal torment of Satan, the beast, and the false prophet in the lake of fire, but it does not give Mormon-style “degrees of glory” or soften eternal punishment. The idea that one-third of the host of heaven fell with Satan prior to Earth’s creation (Revelation 12:4) and that this number will rise after mortal life is an extra-biblical speculation without scriptural foundation.

Mormon doctrine’s concept of “outer darkness” and “degrees of glory” confuses the biblical understanding of hell. The Bible is clear that hell is a real, eternal separation from God for those who reject Christ (Matthew 25:46; 2 Thessalonians 1:9; Revelation 20:10). The true God is holy and just (Isaiah 6:3; Psalm 99:9), and He must punish sin, but He is also merciful and loving, offering salvation freely through faith in Christ (John 3:16; Romans 3:23-24; Romans 6:23).

Perhaps the gravest error of Mormonism is its rejection of the Bible’s sole authority. Scripture declares, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16, NLT). Christians are warned not to add to or take away from God’s Word (Deuteronomy 4:2; Revelation 22:18-19). The idea that modern “living prophets” can correct or supersede Scripture is a dangerous denial of biblical sufficiency (Galatians 1:6-9). This undermines the gospel and opens the door to false teaching.

Mormonism also rejects the doctrine of the Trinity, a core biblical truth taught throughout Scripture. The triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—is revealed in passages like Matthew 28:19 (“baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”) and John 1:1,14 (Jesus as the Word who is God and became flesh). The Apostle Paul’s benediction in 2 Corinthians 13:14 references the three Persons of the Godhead, affirming early Christian belief. Denying the Trinity leads to a faulty understanding of God’s nature and the work of salvation.

The Mormon portrayal of God as merciful contrasted with the Bible’s God as “ruthless” is a false dichotomy. The Bible shows a God who is both holy and merciful, whose justice was satisfied by Christ’s sacrifice on the cross (Romans 3:25-26). Mercy and judgment meet in Jesus (Psalm 85:10), who offers forgiveness and eternal life to those who repent and believe (Acts 4:12; Ephesians 2:8-9).

Attempts to twist words and misrepresent Scripture only lead to circular arguments and confusion. The Bible warns believers to avoid fruitless disputes and to stop “casting pearls before swine” (Matthew 7:6; Titus 3:10-11).

Because of these errors, I have ceased debate and instead pray that God will open hearts to the truth of Jesus Christ alone—the eternal Son of God, fully divine and fully human—not a created being or spirit brother of Lucifer. The biblical gospel is the only path to salvation.

I invite those caught in the deception of Mormonism to test their beliefs against Scripture honestly, reject false prophets, and embrace the grace of Christ alone.
