Truth Is Found in the Bible, Not Modern "Prophets"
When someone says, “We do not rely on written words in a book to come to know all truth,” it may sound spiritual—but it is deeply dangerous. That kind of thinking unravels the very foundation of Christianity and rejects how God has clearly revealed Himself through His Word. It’s not humility—it’s rebellion cloaked in religious rhetoric.
The Bible is not just ink on paper; it is the Word of the living God. “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives” (2 Timothy 3:16, NLT). To claim that we don’t need Scripture to know truth is to reject the very Spirit of God who authored the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit doesn’t bypass the Bible—He works through it. “No prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God” (2 Peter 1:20–21, NLT).
The accusation that Christians twist Scripture like the Pharisees did is ironic. The Pharisees added their traditions to the Word of God and nullified it (Mark 7:13). That is far closer to what the LDS church does—elevating the words of so-called modern prophets and other writings like the Book of Mormon above the Bible itself. Jesus, on the other hand, quoted Scripture authoritatively and treated it as the final standard. “It is written” was His reply to Satan’s lies in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1–11). If Jesus relied on the Word of God, who are we to say we can find truth without it?
The claim that faith does not submit to the Bible is simply untrue. While the Bible may not use that exact phrase, it absolutely affirms that faith is born from and shaped by the Word. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17, NKJV). The Scriptures are “able to give you wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15, NLT). True faith submits to the truth God has revealed—not to our feelings, visions, or prophets who come later claiming to have new revelation.
The idea that modern LDS prophets speak with divine authority like Old Testament prophets is not only unbiblical—it’s refuted by Scripture. “Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son” (Hebrews 1:1–2, NLT). The apostles were chosen as eyewitnesses of Christ's resurrection, and no one today qualifies to hold that office. Any modern claim to prophetic authority must be tested, and the test is clear: “If anyone preaches any other Good News than the one you welcomed, let that person be cursed” (Galatians 1:9, NLT). Joseph Smith claimed an angel gave him another gospel. The Bible says even if that were true, it’s still false and cursed.
Finally, the appeal to subjective spiritual confirmation—the idea that “truth is confirmed by the Spirit”—must be tethered to God’s Word. The Bible warns that “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14), and we are told to “test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1). That test is not feelings, but truth revealed in Scripture. “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no light” (Isaiah 8:20, KJV).
Genuine Christianity is not based on “a burning in the bosom” or the authority of a church, but on the eternal, unchanging Word of God and the gospel of grace: that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3–4). That is the gospel. Not the gospel of Joseph Smith, not the gospel of LDS prophets, not the gospel of added books—but the gospel as revealed once and for all in the Bible (Jude 1:3). Any other gospel is false.
Friend, the Holy Spirit will never lead you away from the Bible. He leads you into it. Don’t fall for spiritual-sounding arguments that cast doubt on God’s Word. Trust in Jesus—the real Jesus of Scripture—and submit to His truth. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12), and there is no other truth that leads to eternal life.
