What’s Up with Mormon Exaltation?

Alright, so Mormonism has this thing called “exaltation,” and honestly, it sounds kinda wild if you’re hearing about it for the first time. The idea is that if you’re really faithful and follow all their teachings, you don’t just get to hang out with God forever—you actually become a god yourself. Like, you get your own planets to rule, have spirit kids, and basically join this big “god club.” It’s like leveling up from human to deity. Sounds like a sci-fi movie, right?

They teach that we’re all made from the same kind of eternal “stuff” as God, and that we’re actually His literal kids. So if we do everything right, we get promoted to godhood. Ultimate family upgrade!

But here’s the thing: when you look at the Bible, God is always shown as eternal and unchanging. For example, Psalm 90:2 says, “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” That means God has always been God, and no one else ever becomes Him.

When Lucifer (Satan) tried to be like God, it didn’t end well for him (Isaiah 14:13-14). His pride and rebellion got him kicked out of heaven, which led to a lot of mess for the rest of us.

Jesus, on the other hand, is shown in the Bible as uniquely God—never a human who just “became” God later on. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” And Philippians 2:5-6 reminds us that Jesus “though he was God, did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.” Colossians 2:9-10 also says, “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form...and you have been given fullness in Christ.”

So, from a Christian point of view, the idea that humans can become gods is a pretty big stretch. God is God, and we are His creation. We get the incredible gift of eternal life with God, but the Bible never says we become God or gods ourselves.

It’s kind of like being invited to a party at the king’s castle—you get to go in and enjoy the celebration, but you don’t become the king. We get to enjoy eternal life with God, but we stay who we are—His beloved creation.

Bottom line: Mormon exaltation is a unique teaching that doesn’t match up with what the Bible says. Christians believe in eternal life with God, yes, but always as God’s creation, never as gods ourselves.
